Tarot birth cards

Tarot Birth Card Calculator

Your tarot birth cards come from your date of birth: add the month, day and year, then keep adding the digits until you reach a number from 1 to 21. That number, and the digits of it added together, point to your Major Arcana birth cards.

How the birth card method works

This is the method popularised by tarot author Mary K. Greer in the 1980s. The first, larger number describes the outer expression of your life theme; the second, single-digit card describes its inner core. The cards are a lens for reflection, not a fixed destiny.

  • Add your birth month, day and four-digit year as whole numbers. Example: 28 March 1991 gives 3 + 28 + 1991 = 2022.
  • Add the digits of the total: 2 + 0 + 2 + 2 = 6. Repeat until the number is 21 or less.
  • If the result has two digits, add them to get a second card. 19 is special: 19 → 10 → 1 gives three cards.
  • Card 22 is never reached, so The Fool does not appear as a birth card; many readers see it as the card that belongs to everyone.

How common is each birth card?

We counted every date from 1940 to 2010. Pairs built on 4, 5, 6 and 7 are the most common, at about 10% of birthdays each; 15/6 (0.2%) and 14/5 (0.5%) are rare, and the single Magician (1) never occurs for dates in this range.

Frequently asked questions

Can my birth card be The Fool?

No. The method never produces 22 or 0, so The Fool is not a birth card. Many readers treat it as everyone's card, the traveller who walks through all the others.

What if my result is a single number?

Then you have one birth card rather than a pair. Results from 2 to 9 are common: about seven in ten people born 1940–2010 have a two-digit pair, the rest a single card.

Is my date of birth sent anywhere?

No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
