Where these correspondences come from

These pairings come from the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn in late-19th-century England and were built into the imagery of the Rider-Waite deck by A. E. Waite and artist Pamela Colman Smith. To keep the card order aligned with the zodiac, Waite swapped Strength and Justice: Strength became card 8 for Leo and Justice card 11 for Libra.

The seven classical planets each have a Major Arcana card too: Mercury is The Magician, the Moon The High Priestess, Venus The Empress, Jupiter the Wheel of Fortune, Mars The Tower, the Sun The Sun and Saturn The World. The modern outer planets are usually given to The Fool (Uranus), The Hanged Man (Neptune) and Judgement (Pluto). The four elements map to the minor suits: fire is Wands, water Cups, air Swords and earth Pentacles.
